Methods of Creating Man-Made Diamonds

Women love to wear diamonds as part of their accessories. Most women cannot resist diamonds because of its shine and sparkle. Diamond accessories are made for women to enhance and show off their beauty to the world. Expensive diamonds are everlasting and stylish. Cheaper alternatives include varieties of lab created diamond. Recent methods produce mass synthetic gems for the jewelry industry but the history of man-made diamonds is over a hundred years old. Cubic Zirconia is another term for lab created diamonds.

Henry Moissan received a nobel price in 1906 for his theory about how diamonds are made. According to Henry Moissan's theory, diamonds are formed by crystallizing carbon with pressure and heat from molten iron. He designed and built an electric-arc furnace to prove his theory. He subsequently produced several tiny stones that had the same properties as mined diamonds.

The experiment was repeated by Ruffin in 1917 and followed by Dr Willard Hershey in 1926. The result of Hershey's experiment is in McPherson Museum in Kansas. In 1941, General Electric was able to produce a one-carat diamond. The industrial abrasives market used profitable synthesized diamonds that he create in  1954. In the industrial abrasives market, diamonds of over 600 metric tons and 26 metric tons of gemstones are formed yearly.

Two methods are applied in making gemstones. First method was known High Pressure High Temperature (HPHT). To create diamonds, high pressure and really high temperatures enough to form an environment that is almost the same as Earth`s core is required. The other method used to produce quality diamonds is called Chemical Vapor Deposition. Plasma cloud are formed when pure carbon and hydrogen is heated about 18000 Fahrenheit. As the plasma cools, the carbon will precipitate out of the mixture and the carbon atoms will be deposited on wafer seeds. The wafers will grow at about 1/2 mm a day. HTHP method has the a greater ability to control the impurities allowed in the final diamond composition. CVD methods produce larger and more expensive man-made diamonds.
